The result of the contest between former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and Finance Minister Hafeez Sheikh in the Senate general election in Islamabad has come to light.
Yousuf Raza Gilani has won the general seat. According to the Returning Officer, 340 votes were cast out of which Yousuf Raza Gilani got 169 votes while Hafeez Sheikh got 164 votes. Thus Yousuf Raza Gilani defeated Hafeez Sheikh by five votes and was elected Senator from Islamabad. According to the returning officer, 7 votes were rejected.
Voting took place in the National Assembly on the general seat of Islamabad in which the opposition candidate former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani was declared the winner. Re-voting was held by the government but Yousuf Raza Gilani was also successful in re-voting.
The women’s seat from Islamabad was contested between PML-N’s Farzana Kausar and PTI’s Fauzia Arshad. In this contest, PTI’s Fauzia Arshad got 174 votes and was elected senator.
The most interesting and big battle of the Senate elections was at the general seat of the federal capital Islamabad where former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Sheikh were competing against each other. Voting for this seat took place in the National Assembly.
The ruling coalition had 181 seats while the opposition parties had 160 seats.
The fate of candidates for 2 seats in Islamabad, 11 in the Sindh Assembly, 12 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and 12 in Balochistan is being decided today.

All 340 members of the National Assembly except Maulana Abdul Akbar Chitrali of Jamaat-e-Islami cast their votes. Shehryar Afridi’s vote is likely to be lost due to the signing of the ballot paper.
