ISLAMABAD: Home and Accountability Advisor Shehzad Akbar has made public the documents of the agreement related to Broadsheet and said that transparency cannot come without making the documents public. The estimated value of their theft is Rs.16 billion.

According to details, Interior and Accountability Advisor Shehzad Akbar while addressing a press conference said that he would like to say a few things on the issue of Broadsheets.

At the direction of the Prime Minister, the Attorney General’s Office contacted the lawyers to make public important documents related to Broadsheets. It is learned that on the directive of the Prime Minister, the two are publishing the documents of the decision regarding the broadsheet.

Shehzad Akbar said that written permission has also been given by Broadsheet through e-mail. Liability and Quantum documents are being made public.

Explaining the details of the agreement, the Home Adviser said that the East Recovery Agreement with Broadsheet was signed in 2000, then in June 2000 under Pervez Musharraf’s government and in December 2000 Nawaz Sharif reached Saudi Arabia after reaching a deal.

Shehzad Akbar said that in October 2003, the government canceled the contract with Broadsheet. At the time of settlement payment with Broadsheet, the PPP government was in power. In 2016, the Liability Award goes to Pakistan. The decision came, our government came in August 2018 and appealed to the High Court in 2019 on the Broadsheet issue.

He said that the decision of the appeal is in favor of the broadsheet, the payment is made on December 31, 2020, his name is on the list in which the money was paid by the government of Pakistan.

Shehzad Akbar said that Nawaz Sharif’s Avonfield property was given to Broadsheet, $20.5 million dollars out of $21.5 million dollars had to be paid to the Sharif family while Shaun Group, Sherpao, and others paid only $1.08 million dollars.

The Adviser on Home Affairs and Accountability said that we have to bear the brunt of this past, it is written in it that other assets including Avonfield have been proved, if these are also NROs of the past then they should also be looked into.

He said that the decision has been made public as per the order of the Prime Minister. We all see that accountability is not visible, the real reason for not being accountable is the past opinion.

Shehzad Akbar said that according to the law, it is necessary to go through the process. It is necessary to look at the 2000 agreement from Broadsheet by December 31, 2020. One person has been disqualified but the party still considers him a leader.

The Home Adviser said that the decision on the appeal in the High Court came against us in July 2019. In the appeal, our position was that there were no recoveries. Mansoor-ul-Haq’s name was not mentioned in the Broadsheet agreement. We should also trust our institutions, the broadsheet was paid with taxpayers’ money.

He further said that within 48 hours, the Prime Minister sought recommendations that would also be made public. One thing is clear, past deals and NROs are suffering. Deals are called reconciliation, which is a great loss to the country and the nation. The committee will decide against whom and what action should be taken.
