The Acting Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) has replaced a teacher as a thesis supervisor following numerous allegations of sexual harassment.

According to the details, the ethics committee overseeing the issue has also been changed, and now the fact-finding committee has been tasked with investigating allegations of sexual harassment leveled by some MSc (Hons) students of Food Technology, Human Nutrition, and Dietetics in the Department of National Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFSAT).

The students alleged that the supervisor sexually harassed them while examining their thesis on March 1 and 2.

Three of them contacted the director of student affairs with a request that the accused use objectionable language and also harass his fellow students.

The students demanded stern action against the teachers and demanded that they be fired as supervisors so that they could study independently.

A UAF spokesman said the supervisor had been replaced by the director of the NIFSAT.

The three-member fact-finding committee, comprising all men, includes the Dean’s Faculty of Food, Nutrition and Home Sciences, and Animal Husbandry.

He was directed to ascertain the facts and present them to the Acting VC, Dr. Zafar Tanveer. However, it was not clear how long the committee could take to present its findings and its scope.

A faculty member, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the committee was not allowed to summon any other faculty or staff members.

He questioned why anyone would care about such a committee as no department has been asked to co-operate with it.

He said that by attaching the name of the suspect and the request of the girls, the scope of his independent and fair investigation has already been limited.
