Earlier, in the first innings of the Chennai Test, England scored 578 runs thanks to skipper Joe Root’s magnificent double century of 218 and Dom Sibley’s 87. Jaspreet Bumra and Ashwin took three wickets each for India.
India was bowled out for 337 in their first innings. Dom Base bowled four wickets for 76 runs for England. James Anderson took two wickets.
England followed India in the first innings and took a 241-run lead. However, instead of following India, England decided to bat on their own. The visitors were bowled out for only 178 in their innings. Ashwin bowled brilliantly and took six wickets.
