Manama: A local court in Bahrain has sentenced a doctor to three years in prison for declaring live newborns dead after the children’s father found them alive at the funeral.
According to local media, the doctor and two other staff members of the hospital who caused the deaths of the children were sentenced to 3 and 1, 1 year imprisonment respectively for negligence and carelessness.
The convicts were also fined 1,000 Bahraini dinars, while a nurse named in the case was acquitted by the court.
The case was filed by the father of the newborn twins against the Sulaymaniyah Medical Complex in a local court, where staff declared his newborn twins dead and handed them over for final rites.
However, at the time of the funeral, the father noticed that the children were breathing, after which he rushed them back to the hospital. At the hospital, he was told that a child was alive. The child was admitted and given medical treatment but died shortly afterward.
Following the incident, the public prosecution launched an investigation. According to the forensic report of the incident, both the children were born prematurely and could hardly breathe. His condition demanded that he be immediately transferred to the intensive care unit.
However, the hospital staff continued to provide medical assistance to the children in a modest manner. The forensic report said that if the two children had been transferred to the ICU immediately, their lives could have been saved.
The court convicted the doctor and other staff on the basis of forensic reports and other evidence.
