KABUL: Clashes between the Taliban and Afghan security forces have intensified in Afghanistan despite peace talks.

According to Afghan media, the Taliban attacked an Afghan force post in the Ghorian district of Herat province on Friday night, killing 13 members of the local police.

Herat police spokesman Abdul Ahad Walizada said the Taliban attacked the checkpoint from three sides, taking the weapons of the Taliban forces with them after the attack.

The attack comes just hours after the United States announced it would reduce its troop numbers in Afghanistan, with the United States reducing its troop numbers in Afghanistan to 2,500 following the US-Taliban agreement reached in Doha in February last year.

According to Afghan media, Taliban attacks in Kunduz and Kandahar have killed at least 14 members of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces in the past 24 hours.

Clashes between government forces and the Taliban have been reported in parts of Afghanistan’s 21 provinces in the past 24 hours, according to security figures.
